The advent of the Internet has enabled almost anyone to start a business from anywhere with minimal or even without investment. Gone are the days when people used to think that starting and making money from a business is too difficult. We even tackled some business ideas that you can start at home in a previous post, but here we'll go over some home-based businesses without investment. So, if you're interested in starting your own business at home but don't want to put up a huge capital or hate to invest any money at all, here are some ideas you can go with:
1. E-book Writing
Are you a story-teller who can elaborate a particular subject into a content piece with a nice layout that readers can actually consume and understand? Then you might consider getting into the e-book writing business to earn a living at home without costing an arm and a leg.
The first step and probably one of the most important one is to conduct in-depth market research, specifically keyword research to identify what people are searching for online.
Think about a subject you are interested in writing about, get on google or this nifty tool to scout for relevant keywords that you can use to develop your topic based on the subject or niche that you are looking into.
This is an important step because you are also establishing your SEO by identifying the right keywords you want to rank for to attract the right traffic to your e-books later on.
Once you've done your writing and ready to publish, you can create a sales landing page using platforms like Wix or WordPress, so you can sell your e-books.
On the other hand, you may opt to self-publishing through platforms like CreateSpace, Lulu, and Kindle Direct Publishing that allows you to have control over your work while bringing you the right audience for a certain cut once your e-books start to sell.
Blogging used to be a pastime of frustrated writers or people who like to chronicle their daily lives using web-based journals like Tumblr or Blogspot (now Blogger).
Today, blogging has evolved into a whole new level in the technology industry. Basically, you have two options in setting up – you can either use the free WordPress option or Blogger (a commercial-free platform).
They have fairly the same features and functions, and both can be monetized through their own ad networks.
Aside from the options above, some people opt to use website builders like Wix.com or Web.com because these website builders can create both regular web pages and blog-type pages - so there really is a lot of thinking you need to do should you plan on diving into this business.
So how can you earn through blogging without shelling out a fortune? The key is getting free traffic from search engines like Google.
Again, you will need to do in-depth keyword research to find keywords, topics, and niches people are looking for.
Note that there are some other necessary elements that you will have to fork out a few bucks for (like domain name and hosting). These extra costs will depend on your chosen domain name (domain names vary in price) and hosting service provider.
Earn income through ads, sponsored content like product reviews, or affiliate marketing. Learn how to get your first advertiser in this post from an established blogger in the US.
3. Uploading Video Content on Facebook
With billions of daily users, it's no wonder why Facebook has become a popular place to do a variety of tactics to boost business.
Did you know that you can now make good money with videos you upload on Facebook? Social Media Examiner listed these eligibility requirements on how to monetize your Facebook videos.
Although there are some speculations as to how this new video monetization feature will play out considering Youtube is the go-to platform in this space, it is worth noting that Facebook is a behemoth in its own right and not going anywhere anytime soon.
So, get your camera ready, create quality content that people will find value or take an interest in, and build your brand as a creator in this space.
To make the most out of in-stream ads, follow best practices, and leverage Facebook's creator resources to get insider tips, expert advice and anything that will make your videos start raking in $$$.
4. New Age Social Media Influencing (TikTok and Instagram)
TikTok (previously known as Musical.ly) is still in its infancy, therefore it is safe to say that people are still defining ways on how to play by its algorithm.
Instagram on the other hand, has gone from a simple photo-sharing site to a full-blown business hub for brands to advertise on by means of paid ads or sponsored content through "influencers" on the platform.
Basically, TikTok users (or influencers) majorly monetizes through sponsored content and ads, just like its predecessor, Instagram. One does not need any form of monetary investment to get onto the platforms.
A great following is an absolute factor to be even considered for a sponsorship; on both platforms. Engagement rates are also important to see how a user interacts with his/her audience.
One of the advantages of being in these platforms is that you only need short-clip videos (it can be as short as 15 seconds!) – the flair and creativity put into it makes all the difference.
Plus, it will not even cost you a dime. So, if you have an eye for creative content and think you can build a good following, sign up for both platforms and start creating quality content videos (think makeup tutorials, DIY tutorials, hacks, etc.) or share aesthetically-pleasing photos.
The more followers and engagement you have, the more likely you will receive sponsorship and partnership proposals from brands big and small.
5. Podcasting (utilizing YouTube)
You might ask why upload on Youtube? That is because most podcasting websites require a monthly subscription from podcasters – which is off the table at this point.
Putting out your podcast show on the world's biggest streaming platform gives you great exposure and access to billions of users who browse content on Youtube every day.
Plus, you get instant engagement and feedback through the comment section. What could be better than that?
According to Buzz Sprout's latest statistics, 90 million Americans listen to a podcast every month; and the podcasting industry saw a 120% growth of American weekly listeners over the past four years.
You don't need intricate equipment for this.
You can record high-quality audio or video with just your smartphone. Pick out a tripod to keep your device steady.
Podcaster topics can be about anything.
A podcast can monetize content almost the same way as bloggers do, like offering discount codes to their audience when they purchase products/services through the podcaster's links (aka affiliate marketing), sponsored content, product reviews, and setting up pay-per-click ads.
Growing your brand or show on Youtube will not happen overnight. You may even have to double your effort at the beginning to be eligible to monetize your channel.
But over time, a healthy library of content in your channel can turn into a serious revenue stream.
If you have been visualizing having your own home-based business, now is the right time to do it. Stop delaying and get to work. All you need to do is take the first step, and you will be amazed by how much you can accomplish when you set your heart into starting your journey to financial freedom.
